Silicone Breast Implants Give Saline a Run for Their Money

Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 28, 2007 -- Denver breast augmentation expert has seen a drastic shift in demand for silicone breast implants since their recent approval by the FDA.

Since the FDA's decision to approve silicone breast implants and return these devices to the U.S. market, silicone breast augmentation has risen sharply. Whereas prior to the FDA approval, 100% of patients were choosing saline implants, in the three months since their approval, that number has dropped to just 50%, while the other 50% are now opting for the new silicone implants.

It looks as though the popularity of silicone implants will continue to trend up. Dr. Goldstein, a Denver breast implant surgeon with over 20 years of experience using silicone breast implants, said "In our Colorado office, upwards of 75% of the patients that are considering breast implants are looking to get the silicone implant. The availability of silicone implants has offered our patients a better choice for their needs and a tremendous amount of them are making that choice."

Breast augmentation has become one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the US. This is due large in part to the popularity of silicone breast implants. In countries where silicone is available, patients will actually choose it 90% of the time. After the FDA restricted the use of silicone implants in 1992, plastic surgeons experienced a drop in the number of breast augmentations (also known as breast enlargement, or breast enhancement) performed. MemoryGel™ breast implants are widely used by doctors and patients in over 75 countries, and are now widely used in the US as well. Since the FDA's approval in November 2006 of the new Mentor MemoryGel™ breast implants, the popularity of silicone implants has once again begun to rise.

Mentor MemoryGel™ Breast Implants vs. Saline Implants

Dr. Goldstein feels that Mentor MemoryGel™ is a superior implant in terms of safety and the natural results that are achieved. Just what is it about these implants that make them so popular with doctors and patients?

The MemoryGel™ implant is made of cohesive, silicone-gel pieces. These pieces are designed to prevent leakage and keep solid form. The molecular bonds in this silicone are much tighter, making it semi-solid. When cut, the affect is similar to cutting into a gummy bear; it maintains its shape and does not leak. There are several other advantages to the "gummy bear" implant. The implant is soft and natural feeling, whereas the saline implant tends to feel firm and slightly more artificial. MemoryGel™ breast implants maintain their shape and upright position, while the saline implant may ripple or fold slightly over time. The durability of the cohesive gel implant looks incredibly promising as well. The choice between silicone and saline is ultimately up to the individual client, and they should research both options.
